Frontispiece portrait of the author with offsetting of the same to the title page, owing to the lack of a tissue guard (not sure it was issued with one). Brownlow was governor of TN from 1865-1869. Because he opposed secession during the Civil War he was briefly imprisoned and later fled to the north.
