Three volumes (of five, meaning this is lacking volume III and V). Original brown cloth stamped in blind. Revised and edited by Andrew R. Fausset. OCLC locates five institutions which have all five volumes of this first English language edition. Bengel's work is considered historically important because of the interest it revived in Biblical studies when it was first published in 1742. Spurgeon said that it is, ".the scholar's delight" (Commenting and Commentaries, page 15). He is Arminian in theology and Wesley is said to have relied on him heavily. Spurgeon goes on to say, "Men with a dislike for thinking had better not purchase the five precious volumes, for they will be of little use to them." (16). So there's your challenge. All three volumes lacking their backstrips and reinforced with transparent tape. Corners bumped. Hinges cracked. Bumps to the leading edges of the boards. All three volumes bear the gift inscription of C.W. Boase to W.P. Chappel and are dated 1860. Boase was a well known antiquarian in the Oxford area in his time. Chappel was rector of Camborne. Size: 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
