The Scrap Book; or Humorous Annual

Price: $75.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Fair

286pp. Original full decorative leather, elaborately stamped in blind and spine lettering in gilt. Illustrated with woodcuts. Further subtitled, "A selection of humorous stories, interesting fables and authentic anecdotes." Accounts of Native Americans, African American slaves, and the burning of widows in India, among many other accounts. These "humorous annuals" were not limited to jokes or funny stories, but included short accounts of interest to the early 19th century reader. Many of the full page illustrations are printed on yellow paper; others are on plain white paper or in text. The style of the illustrations are somewhat grotesque, with faces rendered in abnormal, almost gothic, ways. The back strip is split vertically and almost half of it is missing. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Ownership inscriptions on the prelims. The front board is loose from the binding, but present. Some bowing to the boards. Button sized hole in one leaf; another leaf has a large closed tear. A good candidate for rebinding. Quite scarce: the OCLC Worldcat locates NO copies of this specific edition in university holdings, although there is an 1838 39 edition printed in Boston that is found in two institutions. Size: 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall
