Beman was an abolitionist and a president of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1845-1865. He was also the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Troy, NY from 1823-1863 (see DAB II:171-72). He is best known for his role in the Old School-New School controversy and has been considered as influential on the revivalist Charles Finney because of a revival he held in his church in 1826.
