995pp. + 328pp. Dutch language. Full leather with elaborate blind stamping. Bound by the British bookbinder, "Watkins" with her binding ticket on the front pastedown. The binder is Louisa Watkins, who used an engine-turned die to create the ornate blindstamping on the boards. According to Maggs' Brothers "Bookbinding in the British Isles, Sixteenth to the Twentieth Centuries, Part I", this die was turned upon the Rose Engine. It was first used by Congreve to create a more elaborate plate for the printing of currency. See Item #243 in the aforementioned book to see an example of an 1842 Bible with the same decoration and the same binder's ticket. The binding is also "signed" at the base of the spine with a very faint "W". I am quite sure I have massacred the publisher of this volume since my Dutch blackletter is horrible. Bookplate on the front pastedown (in Dutch) is from a Dutch emmigration society which printed Bibles for emmigrants. Corners bumped and rubbed through. All edges dusty. Very occasional foxing. Lacking the title page for both Testaments, but the New Testament title page is intact. Dutch immigrant (to NY) genealogical information on the endpapers and back pastedown. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall
