145pp. 1st Edition. Original green cloth with lettering and decoration stamped in gilt. Smith was a journalist who ended up working with the Black section of the Louisiana Writer's Project. This is her first, and only, book. A slavery novel. "In a letter to the author, William Pickens says of this story: 'It will be a great triumph for you, and for more decency in Negro story-literature" (from the blurb on the back panel). Quite scarce in the original dust jacket. Spine lettering a bit dull with some scuffing toward the head of the spine. Top corners bumped. The jacket is soiled, lightly sunned at the spine, with several small closed tears to the edges, including a larger closed tear to the front panel.
