140pp. + 2pp. ads. Original brown cloth, decoratively stamped in blind, spine lettering and decoration stamped in gilt. Frontispiece illustration. Waddel was best known for his work as an educator. He built a two room log school and educated many influential American citizens. The DAB recognizes his most distinguished pupils as John C. Calhoun, William H. Crawford, Hugh S. Legare, George McDuffie, A.B. Longstreet and James L. Petigru. While the DAB points out that this work is, "a most tedious religious tract" it was considered a best seller in its day (XIX: 300). This book includes an original CDV (small photograph) of an unnamed elderly woman from the 1860's produced by C.W. Motes, photographer in Athens, GA. Interestingly, and perhaps with some significance, Waddel died in Athens, GA in 1840. Is this a relative? I can't confirm it with certainty since there is no identifying inscription on the photo, but the inscriptions on the front free endpaper are of the Caldwell family and Waddel's brother-in-law was John Caldwell Calhoun (Senator of South Carolina). Ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Some pencil underlining. Foxed. One corner of the tissue guard for the frontispiece is torn away. Corners bumped, one corner rubbed through. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall
