749pp. This copy briefly inscribed and signed by the author on the title page. An original photograph of the author is affixed to the back pastedown with tape, a sepia print in which he looks rather startled, a bit shady, and holding a lit cigarette. Valtin is a pen name for Richard Julius Hermann Krebs, a proponent of what may be one of the most interesting literary hoaxes of the World War Two period. Krebs claimed to have been a German Communist who was later expelled. In 1926 he came to the USA illegally and was arrested for the murder of a merchant seaman during a brawl. He was deported in 1929 and while back in Germany claimed to be a spy for the USSR (in this book, anyway). He claimed the earlier murder was the result of espionage work. In 1942 he was indicted as a Gestapo agent here in the US, but was cleared of these charges. The court revealed that the earlier murder had nothing to do with espionage (source: wikipedia). The spine lettering is a bit dulled. Corners bumped. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall
