208pp. 1st Edition. Original green cloth, titles stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Hawthorne. Bookplate of Charles West Varney, Jr. on the front pastedown. The name "Higginson" inscribed on the same. A previous bookseller has included a note on the front free endpaper indicating that this copy may have belonged to T.W. Higginson. Higginson was a Unitarian minister who was an ardent abolitionist and women's rights advocate. He was also a correspondent and literary mentor to Emily Dickinson. He helped to get Dickinson's poetry published after her death. He also commanded the first black regiment during the Civil War. I have compared the signature here with several Higginson signatures online and believe this to be authentic. According to the foreword, Higginson edited this volume and prepared it for press. Corners gently bumped. Front cover unevenly faded (faint). Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
