850 Books for Bible Expositors

Published by Dr. John MacArthur's Master's Seminary, this is an excellent list of the most up-to-date tools.  A nice replacement for Wilbur Smith's dated lists, but the list is not annotated.  Someone should approach this list in the same style that either Smith wrote his lists or as Rosscup did in his work and publish it as a book.

Andover-Harvard Theological Library

30,000 rare books and other printed materials (pre-1851).  Great information on their special collections.

Bible.org

This link takes you to a list of 49 articles on theological bibliography and library building.  It includes bibliographies for various books of the Bible, a lengthy annotated bibliography on prayer, and many others.  Worth some exploration.

Bridwell Library (Southern Methodist University)

SMU's Bridwell Library (Dallas, TX) has an impressive rare theology collection.  The site has highlights from their recent exhibitions with accompanying bibliographies and their special collections.

"By Their Books we Shall Know Them" by Al Mohler

A good little essay on the importance of books for the minister of the gospel.

Dallas Theological Seminary's Rare Books

You can access some of their rare books in electronic format, each page having been digitially photographed.  A nifty little feature is that each page can be turned with a click of the mouse, giving a virtual impression of flipping through the book.  Both sides of each page have been photographed.  Includes books from the 16th century to today.

Glossary of Bookselling Terms

What does 8vo. mean?  What is an ARC?  What's the difference between a presentation copy and an association copy?  This link will answer these questions for you.

Phil Johnson's Link to Spurgeon's Library

A nice collection of photos and essays about the collection, housed at Wiliam Jewel College in Missouri.

Wilbur Smith on The Apostle Paul's Love of Books

A link to Smith's classic article, an inspiration for anyone wanting to collect theology.

Used & Rare Theological Booksellers

What follows is a list of theological specialists I have done business with personally either as a collector or as a dealer.  I suppose it's not common for dealers to promote the businesses of others, but the specialty is getting narrower, we're all getting older and open shops are closing.  If you can't find what you're looking for with us, perhaps you can find it with one of these excellent dealers.

Aldersgate Books

I have never done business with this dealer, however it is apparent they have a good stock (15,000 volumes).  Located in my old open-air preaching stomping grounds of Niagara Falls, NY.

Baker Book House

Many know of Baker's reputation as a publisher, but they also sell used books.  They reportedly have a huge selection, but there are no estimates on their website.  I bought a bunch of titles from my Wilbur Smith want lists years ago with money from my ordination gift.  Send them your want lists and they will send a quote.  Since Kregel sold off their used inventory, they are the premier used Christian bookseller in Grand Rapids, MI.

Christiana's Book Shelf

Paul Miller's site.  Paul is a good friend who used to live in Batavia, NY but has since relocated.  He sells old theology on eBay and by occasional email list.  I also highly recommend his wife Abigail's music ministry.  A delightful family.

 David C. Lachman

Dr. Lachman is one of the foremost rare theology booksellers in America (of two or three), located in suburban Philadelphia, PA.  He currently has a large collection of Spurgeon manuscript sermons, many with accompanying galleys and corrected in Spurgeon's hand.  The site is not for the faint of wallet, but is fun to browse.

Dust and Ashes Publications

D&A has great eBay auctions.  I purchased a commentary on Romans that once belonged to devotional author Andrew Murray from them.  He has many high end items for sale on his site and offers many great items in the auctions.  They are usually watched closely by collectors so you have to be quick on the draw.  D&A also publishes great books such as "A History of the 1859 Ulster Revival" and Caryl's "Practical Observations on the Book of Job", among others.  While you are there check out their "Sold" items.  Neat stuff!

Ed Franklin

Gage Postal Books

Selling used theology in the UK since 1971.  The pre-eminent theology dealer in the UK.

Great Site

This business is based in Arizona and specializes in rare and antique Bibles.  They have an amazing stock and are the foremost dealer in truly rare Bibles.  I hesitated to include them in this list because of their practice of breaking up old Bibles in order to sell individual leaves, but this is becoming more accepted than it used to be amongst dealers.  Their braggadacio is a bit much; I've never seen a site where a dealer brags about the prestige of their customers (almost any dealer who has been in business any length of time can do the same thing).  However, who can fail to be impressed by the fact that Russell Crowe bought an old Bible from them for his role in "Master and Commander"?

Neil Shillington

Neil has been in business for over 20 years and has about 35,000 books online.  I bought some things from him and have found him to be a classic gentleman bookseller.

Richard Owen Roberts

Roberts is THE expert on American revivalism and has written an important annotated bibliography on the subject.  Over 100,000 volumes in stock.  Check out Mr. Roberts' teachings on revival at www.sermonindex.net.

Stroud Booksellers

In business since 1975 with impeccable credentials.  He is a member of the ABAA, the ILAB and the American Theological Library Association.

Theological Pursuits

A large used theology shop in Fort Worth, TX located fairly close to Southwestern Theological Seminary.  Check out their Reformation t-shirts!
