16 Die Bibel
London Gebrucht Auf Rosten Der Grozbritanischen Und Uuslandischen Bibel Gesellichate 1839 Full Leather Very Good No Jacket 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
995pp. + 328pp. Dutch language. Full leather with elaborate blind stamping. Bound by the British bookbinder, "Watkins" with her binding ticket on the front pastedown. The binder is Louisa Watkins, who used an engine-turned die to create the ornate blindstamping on the boards. According to Maggs' Brothers "Bookbinding in the British Isles, Sixteenth to the Twentieth Centuries, Part I", this die was turned upon the Rose Engine. It was first used by Congreve to create a more elaborate plate for the printing of currency. See Item #243 in the aforementioned book to see an example of an 1842 Bible with the same decoration and the same binder's ticket. The binding is also "signed" at the base of the spine with a very faint "W". I am quite sure I have massacred the publisher of this volume since my Dutch blackletter is horrible. Bookplate on the front pastedown (in Dutch) is from a Dutch emmigration society which printed Bibles for emmigrants. Corners bumped and rubbed through. All edges dusty. Very occasional foxing. Lacking the title page for both Testaments, but the New Testament title page is intact. Dutch immigrant (to NY) genealogical information on the endpapers and back pastedown.

912pp. Bound in stunning contemporary full leather with intricate gilt and light blue stamping, beveled edges, decorative endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated with many very fine engravings depicting Luther's life and Biblical scenes in very fresh condition. Several of the engravings are folding plates and there is one color chromo-lithograph of Jesus. A fine example of German printing from the period with wide, luxurious margins bordered with a decorative blue border. No previous ownership inscriptions. The front joint is split, but neatly repaired with archival quality acid-free binding glue. The back joint is starting, but is likewise repaired. Corners bumped and rubbed through. In spite of the flaws, the binding and the text are both quite bright. A nice example of the bookbinder's art. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
