1 Advertising Piece for a Lecture at a Methodist Church in Syracuse, NY
Syracuse Furman Street Methodist Church 1896 Advertising Card Very Good No Jacket
Business card sized advertising piece--utilitarian, not decorative (although there is creative use of type fonts here). "The New School and Musical Entertainments. Furman Street M.E. Church. Monday Eve., June 15, 1896. Admission, 10 cents." "The New School" may have to do with the theological "old school methods" vs. "new school methods". The new school method of using an altar call, devised by upstate NY revivalist Charles Finney, has become practically an orthodox practice amongst most evangelicals today. It wasn't always considered so. This piece indicates that the next logical step was using musical entertainment (and perhaps small admission fees) in order to spruce up the church service. That this has also become the ultimate in evangelicalism is evident by the worship at most mega-churches today. As far as I know, they still aren't charging admission, however. Not yet anyway. A few faint creases. Size: 48mo - over 3" - 4" Tall
Price: 3.00 USD

13 Four Page Unsigned Letter Dated 1854 Describing the Conversion and Church Life of a Young Woman in New Haven, CT
New Haven 1854 Manuscript Very Good No Jacket
Four page autograph letter unsigned. Housed in the original stampless envelope with postmark in red ("New Haven 12 June 3 Paid"). Envelope addressed to Mrs. Elmira L. Bennett, Turmbull (sic. probably Trumbull), Long Hill, Conn., Care of Mrs. William Squire. Octavo sized sheet folded once to make a duodecimo sheet of four pages. Included with this letter is our typed reading of the letter. Several words are indecipherable but for the most part this warm, pious letter describing the eternal hope of the author in Jesus Christ is quite legible. She writes, in part, "I feel that all I am and are is my blessed masters and I feel blessed in feeling thus. O Elmira, I would not give up the hope of one day reigning above with Christ for ought on earth. I feel that God is truly so mindful of me so kind that when I realize all his goodness to me. I can but cry out unclean, unclean, so unworthy of the least of all his favors." She speaks in detail of a young people's meeting which seem to have improved dramatically with the presence of a new pastor "B. Hoyt." Other guest speakers are mentioned, both male and female. 1854 was a time of revival in both the USA and Great Britain because of the ministry of Charles Spurgeon. The writer makes no mention of Spurgeon, but her warm response to the gospel is typical for the time. Folds. The envelope is browned and the back flap tattered. The original letter is quite clean and crisp. Size: 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
