16 Reed, Edwin Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) Concerning Reed's Two Books on the Theory that "Shakespeare" was a Pseudonym for Francis Bacon
Boston 1902 Unbound Very Good No Jacket Book
This letter is handwritten on 12mo. sized paper and is two pages in length. Dated Sept. 22, 1902. Addressed to Charles R. Nutter, also of Boston, MA. Nutter was the historian of the Harvard Musical Association (see the Wikipedia article on this organization). He's also listed in "Who's Who in New England" (by Albert Nelson Marquis) as instructor in English at Harvard (1902-1907), a literary advisor for the publisher D. Appleton (1907-1911) and on the editorial department for the textbook publisher Ginn & Co. from 1911-1915. This note evidently came with two presentation copies of Reed's books on the theory that Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare's works under a pseudonym. The text of the letter reads, in part: "I infer from a remark made to me by Max, that you take some interest in the discussion, Who wrote Shakespeare? I therefore take the liberty of sending my two latest books on this subject with my compliments" (no, we do not have possession of the books that were sent with this letter). He mentions his work on the 8th edition of his first book as well as plans to begin work on an edition of Shakespeare's works edited from the perspective of Baconian authorship. He also makes specific reference to his book, "Francis Bacon, Our Shake-speare", pages 51-61. Folds. Reed's signature a bit smudged. Housed in original envelope, with the address of the Verulam Society printed in the return address corner, addressed in Reed's hand. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall
