198pp. + 2pp. ads. Bound in contemporary full leather, “signed” (ink stamp) by the binder on the front pastedown (F. Remnant, 1827). Wilson was appointed bishop of Soder and Man in 1698. The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia says, “In 1735 he showed his interest in the missionary aspects of General Oglethorpe’s Georgia plantation scheme, by writing his Essay Towards an Instruction of the Indians, Explaining the Most Essential Doctrines of Christianity. The Essay, which was translated into French and Italian, and met with great favor, was published in 1740 in London. In 1749 he accepted from the Unity of the Brethren the office of honorary president of the reformed section of the Moravian Church. His age at the time debarred him from active service, but he was glad of the opportunity of publicly testifying to his interest in that people” (XII:378). Period ownership inscription on the front pastedown. Joints splitting. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Some foxing. Protected in a mylar sheet.
