407pp. Original decorative brown cloth, elaborately stamped in blind, spine title stamped in gilt. In 1850 Lewis became a professor of Greek at Union College and would later become professor of Oriental languages and Biblical literature. The DAB states that, "…his main purpose was to show that revelation and scientific knowledge are not merely consistent but interdependent" (XI:225). This work is considered one of his most important. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Spine ends worn. The back joint has started but has been cleanly repaired with acid-free binding glue. A couple of instances of pencil marginalia in the table of contents. Library pocket and bookplate on the front pastedown. A couple of white stains to the front cover.
