NY Charles Scribner's Sons 1920 Seventeenth Printing Original Decorative Cloth Very Good No Jacket Signed by Author
296pp. Original decorative cloth, elaborately stamped in gilt and green. Illustrated with eight full page plates by W. Appleton Clark. This copy inscribed and signed by Van Dyke on the front free endpaper, including a popular four line poem (in his hand) which was first published in his popular, “The Story of the Other Wise Man”. His inscription is dated April 13, 1926. Van Dyke graduated from Princeton in 1877 and became a prominent Presbyterian minister. He also became a popular writer and in 1899 accepted a call to Princeton as the Murray Professor of English Literature. His “collected works” runs to 17 volumes. Among his other accomplishments: he was appointed minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. In 1919 the French government gave him the Legion of Honor cross of commander and retired from his teaching post in 1923. For much more on Van Dyke, see the DAB, vol. XIX, pages 187-88. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Extremities rubbed, but not rubbed through. The front free endpaper is unevenly toned.
