1 Wilcox, Rev. Carlos Remains of the Rev. Carlos Wilcox with a Memoir of His Life
Hartford Edward Hopkins 1828 First Edition Full-Leather Good No Jacket Book
430pp. Bound in contemporary full leather (calf) with a leather spine label. Wilcox was pastor of the North Congregational Church in Hartford, CT. This volume contains the memoir, two religious poems and 14 sermons. Charles D. Cleveland in the Compendium of American Literature, says of Wilcox, "Of him as a poet, his writings, though few, enable us to speak in terms of decided praise. It has been truly said that he resembles Cowper in many respects - in the gentleness and tenderness of his sensibilities - in the modest and retiring disposition of his mind - in its fine culture, and its original and poetical cast-and not a little in the character of his poetry" (191). Rufus Wilmot Griswold in Poets and Poetry of America says, "The general character of his poetry is religious and sincere. He was a lover of nature, and he described rural sights and sounds with singular clearness and fidelity. In the ethical and narrative parts of his poems, he was less successful than in the descriptive; but an earnestness and simplicity pervaded all that he wrote" (115-16). Corners bumped and rubbed through. Bottom end of spine chipped. Small ownership ink stamps on one of the blank prelims. Makeshift ownership label on the title page. Pastedowns foxed, some intermittent foxing in the text. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
