1 Calkins, Mary Whiton The Good Man and the Good; An Introduction to Ethics
NY Macmillan 1918 First Edition. Original Cloth Good No Jacket Book 
219pp. + 4pp. ads. In 1890 Calkins began the study of psychology at Harvard, under William James (among others). According to the DAB, "By 1896 she had fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. with distinction, but the university could not grant the degree to a woman" (Supplement One, 150). Calkins established the first psychological laboratory at a woman's college (Wellesley) in 1890. She was the first female president of the American Psychological Association (1905) and the American Philosophical Association (1918), respectively. In 1928 she was made honorary member of the British Psychological Association. Socially, she was a pacifist, strongly supported Sacco and Vanzetti and was a member of the ACLU. Corners bumped and rubbed, but not rubbed through. Ownership inscription of Fredna Jackson, Wellesley 1920 on the front free endpaper. Ownership ink stamp on the same. Underlining on just a few pages and a few instances of marginalia. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
