332pp. Original brown cloth, elaborately stamped in blind, leather spine label stamped in gilt. See Cliff's Capital Punishment: A Bibliography with Abstracts, page 31. Cheever was a Congregationalist pastor who went to Bowdoin College and had classes with Longfellow and Hawthorne. In the 1830's he campaigned for the Temperance movement. In the 1840's he edited The Evangelist and corresponded with Charles G. Finney. He was an active abolitionist. Ownership inscription on the ffep. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Occasional foxing. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall
