6 The Hawthorne Centenary Celebration at the Wayside Concord, Massachusetts July 4-7, 1904
Boston Houghton, Mifflin & Co. 1905 First Edition Original Cloth Very Good No Jacket Book Signed By Owner
208pp. 1st Edition. Original green cloth, titles stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Hawthorne. Bookplate of Charles West Varney, Jr. on the front pastedown. The name "Higginson" inscribed on the same. A previous bookseller has included a note on the front free endpaper indicating that this copy may have belonged to T.W. Higginson. Higginson was a Unitarian minister who was an ardent abolitionist and women's rights advocate. He was also a correspondent and literary mentor to Emily Dickinson. He helped to get Dickinson's poetry published after her death. He also commanded the first black regiment during the Civil War. I have compared the signature here with several Higginson signatures online and believe this to be authentic. According to the foreword, Higginson edited this volume and prepared it for press. Corners gently bumped. Front cover unevenly faded (faint). Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall

7 The New Covenant Commonly Called the New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; Revised Standard Version
NY Thomas Nelson & Sons 1946 Original Cloth Good Fair 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall Signed
523pp. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Ownership inscription of Norm Vanek on the front free endpaper. Dampstain to the front board and the first 68 pages of the text block. The jacket is badly dampstained at the front panel and less so at the spine. The spine ends are chipped and torn. Good in Fair Jacket. The jacket is housed in a mylar protector. In the front of the book is a typed letter signed on stationary from Luther Holcomb, pastor of Lakewood Baptist Church in Dallas, TX. The letter is dated November 22, 1957 (ironically, six years to the day prior to Kennedy's assassination). The letter requests that Vanek (the previous owner of the Bible) prepare a short message from John 1:39-42 titled, "Men Can Win Men" for "Laymen's Sunday" at the church. In the morning service, Congressman Brooks Hays was to speak since he was the fourth layman ever to be elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention. The letter is signed "Luther". Two folds to the letter (no other flaws).

11 Adams, Charles Francis What Makes Slavery a Question of National Concern? A Lecture, Delivered, by Invitation, New York, January 30, and at Syracuse, February 1, 1855
Boston Little, Brown & Co. 1855 First Edition Disbound Good No Jacket Book Signed by Author(s)
46pp. 1st Edition. Disbound. Piece of the original wraps with the author's inscription, "Hon. R.C. Minthrop, with the respects of the author" affixed to the title page. A correction in the author's hand on page 9. Rare. We cannot locate any copies (signed or unsigned) listed for sale anywhere online except the nefarious "print on demand" copies. OCLC locates two copies in institutional holdings, but this is in error since both are attributed to the British Museum. I contacted the British Museum and they confirm that the OCLC is in error--there is only one copy. They further confirm that the copy they hold is NOT in the original wraps and is bound in with a collection of other pamphlets in a later library binding by the Museum. Adams was the son of president John Q. Adams, was a lifelong Unitarian and baptized by the father of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He successfully petitioned the General Court to order the state of Massachusetts to stop returning fugitive slaves to their masters in 1843. He was elected to Congress in 1858 and 1860. In 1861 he was appointed as Ambassador to the court of St. James. In this position he was instrumental in maintaining peace between Britain and the United States as Britain maintained a policy of neutrality towards the Confederate states. He edited many important books on his father John Quincy Adams and his grandfather John Adams. His son, Henry Adams, wrote of him favorably in The Education of Henry Adams. Some creasing. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
